Dubai opens half-mile-high tower, world's tallest

Dubai opens half-mile-high tower, world's tallestDUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Dubai opened the world's tallest skyscraper Monday in a blaze of fireworks, then added a final flourish: It renamed the half-mile-high tower for the head of neighboring Abu Dhabi, whose billions bailed out Dubai amid last year's financial crisis.

Long known as Burj Dubai — Arabic for "Dubai Tower" — the building rises 2,717 feet (828 meters) from the desert. The $1.5 billion "vertical city" of luxury apartments and offices and a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani also plans to have the world's highest mosque (158th floor) and swimming pool (76th floor).

Its backers wanted the skyscraper to be a monument to the boundless, can-do spirit of Dubai — one of a federation of seven small sheikdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates — but the timing could not be worse. Property prices in parts of Dubai collapsed by nearly half in the past year, the result of easy credit and overbuilding during a real estate bubble that has since burst.

Riding to the rescue was Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of oil-rich neighbor Abu Dhabi, which pumped tens of billions of dollars into Dubai last year as it struggled to pay enormous debts.

As officials opened the tapering metal-and-glass spire with fireworks and multicolored lights, they unexpectedly announced it would be renamed Burj Khalifa, to honor the Abu Dhabi leader who is also president of the UAE.

Thousands of cheering, clapping spectators watched as a tally projected on huge screens at the opening ceremony revealed the tower's most closely guarded secret — its height of 2,717 feet. That made it more than 1,000 feet higher than the skyscraper known as Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which at 1,667 feet had been the world's tallest since 2004.

The tallest building in the United States, the Willis Tower in Chicago, comes in at 1,451 feet, although with its spire it measures 1,729 feet and would be considered even taller than Taipei 101. Before they were destroyed in the Sept, 11, 2001, attacks, the World Trade Center towers both topped 1,360 feet. The Freedom Tower being planned for the site will measure 1,776 feet, with completion estimated in 2013.

The exact number of floors for the Burj Khalifa is not known, and could reflect how the developer chose to calculate the total.

Mohammed Alabbar, chairman of the tower's developer Emaar Properties, initially said Monday it had "more than 200" stories, but he later backtracked to more than 165 inhabitable floors, given its tapered top. Promotional materials sent before the tower's opening said it contained 160 stories.

Developers say they are confident in the safety of the tower, which is nearly twice the height of New York's Empire State Building.

Greg Sang, Emaar's director of projects, said the Burj Khalifa has "refuge floors" at 25 to 30 story intervals that are more fire resistant and have separate air supplies in case of emergency. Its reinforced concrete structure, he said, makes it stronger than steel-frame skyscrapers.

"A plane won't be able to slice through the Burj like it did through the steel columns of the World Trade Center," he said.

Dubai has not been a target of terrorist attacks or threats that have been made public.

The tower was designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which has a long track record in engineering some of the world's tallest buildings, including the Willis Tower.

Ahmed Elghazouli, a professor of structural engineering at Imperial College London who was not involved with the Burj's construction, said such groundbreaking buildings typically employ some of the world's best engineers, and go through more rigorous testing and require more studies during design than standard towers.

"I have no doubt that it has been looked after very well in terms of design and construction," he said when asked about the building's safety. "I would be much more comfortable getting into a building like this knowing that so much background work has gone into it."

Dubai was little more than a sleepy fishing village a generation ago, but it boomed into the Middle East's commercial hub in the past two decades on the back of business-friendly trading policies, relative security, and vast amounts of overseas investment.

With little oil of its own, Dubai relied on cheap loans to pump up its international clout during the frenzied boom years.

But like many overextended homeowners, the emirate and its state-backed companies borrowed too heavily and then struggled to keep up with payments as the financial crisis intensified and credit markets froze up.

The sheikdom shocked global markets last year when it unexpectedly announced plans to reorganize its main state-run conglomerate Dubai World and sought new terms in repaying some $26 billion in debt. It got some aid from Abu Dhabi's bailouts.

Dubai's hereditary ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in recent months has increasingly spoken of the close relationship between the two emirates, declaring in November that "Dubai and Abu Dhabi are one" and will "be there for each other." Sheik Mohammed serves as vice president and prime minister of the UAE federation.

Analysts had questioned what Dubai might need to offer in exchange for the financial support it received from Abu Dhabi, which controls nearly all of the UAE's oil wealth. Abu Dhabi provided $25 billion last year as Dubai's debt problems deepened.

"It's really quite remarkable to have to name your biggest and most memorable landmark after the living monarch of a neighboring emirate," said Christopher Davidson, a professor at the University of Durham who has written extensively about the UAE.

Burj developer Emaar is also partly owned by the Dubai government, but is not part of struggling Dubai World, which has investments ranging from Dubai's manmade islands and seaports to luxury retailer Barneys New York and the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2.

Emaar's Alabbar said the landmark Burj is 90 percent sold in a mix of residential units, offices and other space, offering a counterpoint to Dubai's financial woes.

At their peak, some apartments in the Burj were selling for more than $1,900 per square foot, although they now can go for less than half that, said Heather Wipperman Amiji, chief executive of Dubai real estate consultancy Investment Boutique.

Amiji said some buyers may struggle to find tenants at going rates once the tower's expected high service charges are factored in.

The building ranks as the world's tallest structure, beating out a television mast in North Dakota.

Early designs for the Burj had it edging out Taipei 101 by about 33 feet (10 meters), said Bill Baker, the building's structural engineer.

"We weren't sure how high we could go," said Baker, of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. "It was kind of an exploration ... a learning experience."

Work began in 2004 and moved rapidly. At times, new floors were being added almost every three days. During the busiest construction periods, some 12,000 people worked at the tower each day, according to Emaar. Low-wage migrant workers from the Indian subcontinent provided much of the muscle.

The Burj is the centerpiece of a 500-acre development that officials hope will become a new central residential and commercial district in this sprawling and often disconnected city. It is flanked by dozens of smaller but new skyscrapers and the Middle East's largest shopping mall.

That layout — as the core of a lower-rise skyline — lets the Burj stand out prominently against the horizon. It is visible across dozens of miles of rolling sand dunes outside Dubai. From the air, the spire appears as an almost solitary, slender needle.

An observation deck on the 124th floor opens to the public Tuesday, with adult tickets starting at 100 dirhams, or just over $27 apiece. The ride to the top took just over a minute during a visit for journalists Monday.

Dubai landmarks like the sail-shaped Burj al-Arab hotel and the manmade Palm Jumeirah island were visible through the haze.

The Burj itself cast a sundial-like shadow over low-rise houses and empty sand-covered lots stretching toward the azure Persian Gulf.

President Patil safe after chopper accident

President Patil safe after chopper accidentPresident Pratibha Patil, her husband Devisingh Shekhawat and Orissa Governor M C Bhandari had a close shave on Wednesday, when three blades of the helicopter ferrying them back from Puri hit an asbestos shed at Bhubaneswar airport.

All three VVIPs are safe. "The President is continuing with her schedule, and is relaxed," her spokesperson said, adding, "The Air Force will investigate the chopper mishap."

Three blades of the 16-seater helicopter struck the shed, uprooting its asbestos roof; all the blades bent under the impact.

The President was returning to Bhubaneswar after inaugurating an Urban Haat at Puri.

In February this year, a plane carrying 150 passengers narrowly missed colliding with an Air Force chopper at Mumbai airport. That chopper was part of a three-helicopter formation, one of them had Preisdent Patil on board.

Telecom scam: DMK stands by Raja

Telecom scam: DMK stands by RajaIt's a harsh political reality that has put DMK Chief M Karunanidhi in a bind. As his pet minister A Raja is under fire with the CBI raiding his Ministry
over a Rs 22,000 crore spectrum scam, the Tamil Nadu chief minister is reported to have expressed his displeasure to the Congress
high command.

But taking on the Centre could snowball into a confrontation between the two allies and impact their ties not just in Delhi but also in Tamil Nadu.

The party's official line is that Raja had in 2007 kept the Prime Minister in the loop over the grant of 2G spectrum. And that by campaigning for him in the elections and bringing him back to the same ministry, the Congress has all along backed Raja.

"The minister has already clarified his stand. Whatever he has said is the party's stand," said DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi.

In a letter to the Prime Minister in December 2007, Raja had defended his first-come-first-served policy in granting spectrum licences, which said, "My intention is to give lower tariff to consumers."

The DMK is adopting a two-pronged strategy. It has decided to tone down its attack on the Centre over the Mullaiperiyar Dam issue, and to rally around Raja.

Raja's party boss Karunanidhi has always had a soft spot for him because he is a Dalit and is close to his family members. Of course, the Opposition says Raja is the party's golden goose.

In its second innings the UPA does not depend on its Tamil Nadu ally's support. It's the DMK that is in power in the state with the Congress strength - a political compulsion that has pushed Karunanidhi on the backfoot.

PCB clear players to participate in IPL auction

The Pakistan Cricket Board has cleared its players to take part in the January auction for the third Indian Premier League scheduled to be held in March-April next year.

PCB has also directed all its players who are keen to take part in the twenty20 tournament to complete their documents and NOCs by December 31st to be forwarded to the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.

The PCB said in a statement that all players including those who have never played before in the league should either contact Modi directly or the PCB for completion of documents so that their names could be included in the players auction due to take place in January.

"We have issued this directive because this time we don't want the players to miss any deadlines and so that they have ample time to apply for visas and complete their documentation for the players auction," one board official stated.

Modi ruled out the direct participation of Pakistani players in the league's next season insisting they had failed to submit their documents and obtain Indian visas by the given deadline of December 7.

But after the Indian government gave cleared visas for the Pakistani players, Modi said that Pakistani players could make themselves eligible for the players auction and if any franchise was interested in securing their services it would be done through the bidding process.

But some confusion remains about the participation of those players in the auction who played in the IPL first season and had their contracts suspended by their franchises or were replaced by other players after the deadline.

An agent who represents number of Pakistan's leading players said that some franchises had already conveyed their interest in some players and wanted them to take part in the players auction.

"The IPL might not directly allow our players to play in the league but the good thing is that many franchises are interested in signing some of our players," the agent said.

Sources said that Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Tanvir, Danish Kaneria, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal were some of the players on whom the franchises have expressed interest.

A dozen Pakistani players took part in IPL I in 2008 but were not given clearance by their government to play in the second edition this year which led to many franchises either canceling or suspending their contracts.

The source said that Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Asif had some contractual issues with their franchise Delhi Daredevils, while Shoaib Akhtar was also trying to renew his ties with the Shahrukh Khan-owned, Kolkatta Knight Riders.

Sources said many of the players were also keen to play in the IPL as the Pakistan team do not have any international commitments in March-April next year and the T20 World Cup would be held immediately after the IPL.

Sreesanth to miss first two ODIs, Gambhir tests negative

Sreesanth to miss first two ODIs, Gambhir tests negativeIndian pacer Sreesanth, who was down with swine flu, has been ruled out of the first two One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka, starting from December 15 in Rajkot.

Sreesanth, who was admitted to the Fortis Hospital late on Thursday night with symptoms of H1N1, had tested positive for the disease.

While there were reports of Sreesanth to be discharged on Sunday, the BCCI and the doctors want him to stay in the hospital for a few more days. They don't want to allow him to go home as his presence can create panic if he travels by plane. His brother has arrived in Mohali to be with him.

Also, Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, team manager Mayank Parekh and video analyst Dhananjay, who had shown flu-like symptoms, have tested negative.

Earlier in the day, there were reports of Gambhir showing some symptoms and underwent the test. Virat Kohli was also called in as his replacement.

However, PCA President IC Bindra clarified that the test was not conducted on medical advice and it was an administrative measure.

"The test was not done on any medical advice. Both (Gambhir and Dhananjay) are in their hotel rooms right now," Bindra said.

No member of the team will undergo the test till any of them show swine flu-like symptoms. The T20 match between India and Sri Lanka will be played as per schedule today.

Yogi Movie Review

Banner: Team Work Production
Cast: Ameer, Madhumitha, Nanda Periyasamy
Direction: Subramaniam Siva
Production: Ameer
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Hitherto Ameer was looked up on as a director who creates heroes in Tamil film industry. But in the company of filmmaker Subramaniam Siva he has brought out the actor in him. The man who made movies like ‘Ram’ and ‘Paruthiveeran’, has taken to a different canvas this time. He has painted a 'red' Chennai this time around.

The movie which seems to be inspired heavily by Oscar winning Tsotsi, has undergone enough changes in the script to suit Tamil audience. It has action, raw action and free for all in Chennai. Gurudev's lens has captured Chennai in a different way.

Yogi Movie ReviewThe dim lighting gives right pep. Subramaniam Siva's script is rightly complimented by Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score. The violent first half has racy score while the second half is soft dominated by good use of violin as it deals a lot about the love shared between Yogi and a baby.

Ameer as actor passes out in flying colours. He is at his ease right from the first frame till the last. The director in Ameer has given way for the actor, who shakes his legs, emotes and flexes his muscles all through. Equally appealing ids Madhumitha. The actress plays Sulochana who comes across Yogi and slowly develops a soft-corner for him. She plays a woman who has lost all joy in life. Her eyes filled with sorrow and spontaneous body reactions evokes special mention.

Subramaniam Siva has chosen his star cast well. Be it lyricist Snehan who plays Yogi's friend, Vinecent Ashokan as rich entrepreneur of journalist Devaraj as menacing father of Yogi, all have done their part well.

Yogi (Ameer) is a man who keeps to himself. Born and brought up in Chennai slum, he along with his friends thrives of theft, robbery and occasional murders. Yogi is a youth nut to crack. He had a bad past and keeps it to himself. Yogi and his friends decide to rob a restaurant one night. When they finish their job, they are chased buy cop. Yogi manages to flee in a car. After giving a slip to cops, he gets shock of his life. He spots a baby in the back seat of the car. The human being in Yogi wakes up. He leaves the car and takes the baby with him to his house. He is slowly transformed.

Yogi comes across Raja Sulochana (Madhumita), a young mother who is deserted by her lover after giving her a baby. Yogi convinces her to breast feed the baby.

Sequence of events reveals that the baby's mother real mother Caroline (Swathi) is desperate to get her child back while her husband Linden (Vincent Asokan), who married her knowing well that the baby is not his, decides to fins the baby and kill it.

Meanwhile a flashback reveals Yogi's past. Thanks to his father (Devaraj) a beggar, he has had a terrible childhood. His mother ending her life and sister beaten to death by his father on front of his eyes. Though Yogi develops a bond with the child, he decides to leave it to its original parents. But fate has other plans. Yogi eventually loses his life only after reuniting the baby with her mother. The cops close in on Yogi as he decides to give the child back to its parents, leading to a climax twist.

Hats off to producer Ameer for giving a different film, certainly no mindless mass masala movie. But the gory and bloodshed could have been avoided. Subramaniam Siva has liven up the proceedings with a racy script. All in all, Yogi is a brutal yet livable experience on screen.

Modhi Vilaiyadu - Well packaged and glossy, Modhi Vilaiyadu rocks

Modhi Vilaiyadu - Well packaged and glossy, Modhi Vilaiyadu rocks

Banner: Media One Global Entertainment
Cast: Vinay, Kajal Agarwal
Direction: Saran
Music: Colonial Cousins

If Modhi Vilaiyadu is a precursor to ‘Asal’, you are sure Ajith has a blockbuster in hand. Director Saran, who definitely seemed disoriented in both Vattaram and Idhaya Thirudan, bounces back in awesome form with this neatly packaged movie, ‘Modhi Vilaiyadu’.

A factor one observes in all of Saran’s popular films, 'Modhi Vilaiyadu' too, comes with a heavy script written by S Ramakrishnan, that lends to a dreamy first half with a twist that leads to great pace after the intermission. Every character has a soul in the film, something you observe from Kalabavan Mani’s Man Friday Alse to Cochin Haneefa.

If you saw ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ and thought it had one of the best starts ever, you’ll have to watch this one. We talk of an identity crisis but what happens when you live a life not knowing who you really are? What if the life you’re living is what you’ve been cheated into living, and doesn’t belong to you at all?

Such is the dilemma faced by the film’s protagonist Vinay, who plays Udhay Vasudev, son of a billionaire businessman Rajan Vasudev (played by Kalabavan Mani). Vinay is an apt choice for this role, and with his gait, sophistication and body language, you tend to overlook his almost-Tamil dubbing in the film. The actor’s dubbing for himself for the first time, and sure has a long way to go. Kajal Agarwal seems to be evolving into the next girl in the Shalini, Jyothika mould with bubbly characters, and she plays a young, college goer, who is forced to do chores for Vinay. The first half is replete with their antics, which go to unimaginable levels, but heck, this is a film and you know everyday life is exaggerated. Both Vinay and Kajal’s roles have equal meat, and their performance contributes positively to the film.

Kalabavan Mani. As in most films, the villain’s character is a sore thumb here too. It’s high time someone tells the actor his antics aren’t funny to watch, but highly trying on your patience. The man believes in getting things done, hook or crook, and there seems to have been no thought in scripting his character, which is where the movie is at its weakest.

Cochin Haneefa is such a delight to watch! The actor definitely has you in splits. Santhanam, who is clearly on a high in his career graph, is most likely to overtake Vivek and Vadivelu in the comedy race. And Mayilsamy is another interesting addition in the film.

The movie is highly pleasing to the eye, thanks to the camera work by AD Karun. But it’s amply supported by the music by Colonial Cousins and background score by Stephen Devassy. Padhi Kadhal shows musical mastery, and the director has done a commendable job in picturising the song. And the placement, picturisation and concept behind Modhi Vilaiyadu, the title track that appears at a crucial juncture in the film, deserves Saran a pat on his back. Deva, Hariharan and Leslie make cameos in this innovatively composed track.

Perhaps as acknowledgement of Ajith doing ‘Asal’, the director makes a mention of the actor quite often in the movie. We only hope his next offering, which is with Thala himself, proves to be as good as this one.

Bottomline: It’s both funny and fast. Go watch it!
